Lewis Black for ACLU

October 21, 2014 //  Commissioned Work Back to posts

I was contacted by my friends at Variable and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to direct a PSA-style video on voter’s rights staring ACLU’s celebrity ambassador, Lewis Black. The ACLU already had a rough draft of the script with the basic message and facts they wanted to convey, but it was up to me to shape it around a scenario. So, I decided on the environment I’m most familiar with - my photography studio.

BUT- the most important thing: cast someone else (who is much better looking) to play the photographer.

Thanks to all the kind and talented folks at ACLU for trusting me with this important project, and Lewis for being such a professional maniac. To see the social interaction this video has stirred up on ACLU’s Facebook page, peep it here.

Great spot Joey! Must have been really nice to work on a project that can make a difference. Too many people take democracy for granted.

Lewis Black is one of my favourite comedians. You did a wonderful job directing this video! Can't want to see more directing work from you.

Democracy died when the Supremes decided Citizens United. At least Mr. Black can still be angry at everything.

This is fantastic. Great message and great presentation. I'm still laughing thinking about it.
